LETTER FROM THE EDITORWe Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what it stands for. We are in love with Crete's spirit, which has evolved since vivacious Minoan times through perpetual and eventful contacts with different races and civilizations: the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks... This very special spirit transcends the limits of culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs through "rizitika" folk songs and "mantinades" verses; it resides in a plant motif on an ancient Minoan pot; it is there when a proud shepherd drives its flock of sheep up the slopes of Psiloritis mountains; it can be scented in the aroma of dittany; it adds fire to the eyes of a solitary priest saying mass at a small country church, a handgun always passed in his belt... The aim of STIGMES magazine, the aim of all of us who contribute to this edition, is to give readers all over the world an insight of this unique Cretan spirit...
