His passion for Cretan music and personal style of expression made him popular immediately after the release of his first album His strokes of the lyre and songs touch the sensitive chords of youth, while audiences of all ages throng the venues this artist appears. His performances raise enthusiasm and audience's spirits are high until early morning hours. His fans are infatuated with him. Today Giorgos Zervakis, 28, is on course to a successful carrier with a rich repertoire of precious songs that overflow with passion, eroticism, and pain. He has the talent of reciting couplets ("mantinades") that are unique and come alive only by the tone of his voice: If you ever loved me Even for a while, light of my life Give me your hand This hour of pain
(An kapote m' agapises Esto gia ligo fos mou Auti tin ora pou pono To heri sou ela dos mou) Georgios Zervakis has mastered the art of captivating audiences. He is a most commercially successful young artist, but also the target of dispute and, occasionally, insults by other artists in the sector. On the other hand Mr. Manolis Kaklis, a mature and widely recognized artist acknowledges the talent of Mr. Zervakis and credits him also with the fact that he managed to evoke the interest of youth to Cretan folk music. Mr Zervakis is a very sensitive and kind man. He speaks with enthusiasm about the old masters of Cretan music and shows respect for those artists that played a major role in his life, e.g. Mountakis, Skordalos, Klados, and Sifoyiorgakis. He believes that the rendering of the more artistic songs of Nikos Xylouris by young artists is more like a sacrilege. He strongly denies the association of his name with the qualification "traditional artist" and hopes that this is no offense to anyone. He is a staunch believer in the idea that Cretan music ought to evolve, lest it stagnates, and the traditional couples ("mantinades") ought to be recited not sung. Georgios Zervakis was born at Plora, Messara, but raised in Heraklion within a family of art connoisseurs. He was indoctrinated to Cretan music at a very young age, perhaps owing to the fact that his father was a church cantor and an amateur signer as well. What is more, Georgios Zervakis received musical instruction in the private music school of late Kostas Mountakis. This explains his devotion to his teacher.
