| Stratis Kalogeridis
Born
in Sitia in 1883 he studied music in Paris. After 1915 he lived and worked
in Iraklion. The first Cretan musician with a theoretical background and
the first to record Cretan music on scores, he is considered the greatest
Cretan violin player. |

Nikolaos
Harhalis.Born in Harhaliana (Kissamos) in
1884. One of the first violin players of Western Crete. His most productive
period was between 1910 and 1940.

Stelios
Foustalierakis (Foustalieris) Born in 1911 in
Rethimnon. He practiced the "boulgari", a mandolin like instrument, which he helped recognizing as a melodious instrument fit for
solo performances. He was influenced by "rebetika" songs during his stay
in Piraeus. |

| Harilaos Piperakis
or Harilaos Born in 1892 in Xerosteri (Apokoronas).
He migrated in USA very young. He contributed greatly in promoting
Cretan music in the "New world" |

Antonis
Kareklas Born in 1892 in Perivolia (Rethimnon).
The propagation of lyra in Central Crete is due mainly to him

Kostis Moudakis Born in 1926 in Alfa (Mylopotamos).
His contribution to the preservation and dissemination of the lyra
and Cretan musical tradition is invaluable. He performed all over the world
and collaborated with great Greek folk artists. |

Giannis
Dermitzakis (Dermitzogiannis) Born in Sitia
in 1907. A great musician with many talents he plays the lyra, the violin
and is a very expressive performer. Also a great "mantinada" composer.

| Manolis Lagoudakis (Lagos). Born in 1910 in Perivolia
(Rethimnon).
A great lyra player and song writer. He worked on refining the sound and
the shape of the lyra along with Manolis Stagakis, a well known instrument
manufacturer. |

Giorgis
Saridakis (Mavros) Born in 1910 in Skoutelonas (Kissamos). He taught himself the violin at the age of 10 and distinguished
himself as a creator and a great soloist

| Giannis Bernidakis (Baxevanis) Born in Rethimnon in 1910. The
"nightingale of Crete" was a great lute player and singer and he performed
with all the great lyra players of Rethimnon. |

Manolis
Pasparakis (Stravos) Born in Anoghia in 1911.
An infant disease left him blind, hence his nickname. He contributed greatly
in defining the characteristics of the "Anoghia school" of Cretan
music.

| Αlekos Karavitis.
Born in 1904 in Aktouda (Aghios Vassilios). A lyra player from the highlands
he is well known to the Cretan community of Athens thanks to the little "kafeneion" he kept from 1927 |

Andreas
Rodinos Born in 1912 in Rethimnon. When
13 years old he apprenticed the lyra and at the age of 16 he formed his
own group. He had a passion for the instrument and often played at fairs
and marriages without any reward. He passed away at the age of 22, holding
tight a case containing his two favorite lyres. |

Giorgos
Koutsourelis Born in 1914 in Kissamos. An inspired
and very skillful lute player he performed solo or in the company of the
greatest lyra and violin players. He contributed greatly in promoting Cretan
music all over Greece through radio shows and live appearances.

| Nikos Papadogiannis
Born
in Aghia (Mylopotamos) in 1914 he made his first public appearance at the
age of 12. A great lyra player and singer, he performed often for the Greek
Radio Station, which made him well known all over Greece. |

Kostas Papadakis
(Naftis) Born in 1920
in Kissamos. His first violin was a valuable "Guarnieri" of 1710
manufactured in Italy. A great violin player he also published a book entitled
"Cretan Lyre: a myth" |

| Giorgos Kalogridis.
Born
in 1923 in Spili. Original melodies, excellent vocals and carefully chosen
lyrics are characteristics of his art. He emigrated in New York in 1966. |

Thanassis
Skordalos Born in 1920 in Spili. His technique,
knowledge of rhythm and rare simplicity of expression paved the way for
artists to follow. He traveled all over the world, performing for Cretan
emigrants. |
